Film Fridays

Last year my sister and I made sure that every weekend we had a movie night. This usually meant we watched a tried and true favorite, so by the end of the year we had seen one film about 28 times.

Now that the weather is officially cold (Yikes, it's already November!), my goal is to see at least one new (new to me) movie a week. This is a lofty goal, because I'm not great at sitting through movies. So I'm in need of suggestions! Here are some films I've seen and love.

My English class recently watched Double Indemnity, so perhaps I'll have a Film Noir phase.

P.S . . . Would you go to the movies by yourself?  Have a great weekend!

Love These...

My fall favorites have come back! Remember when I featured them last year? Especially with American Sportswear every wear, these knee pad tights add the perfect touch. Not too girly, with the right amount of quirky. These are adorable, too!

{Weekend Update}...Greetings, October!

I definitely took advantage of the "holiday" yesterday and focused on some much needed schoolwork! I've had piles of readings, papers, and exams that continue to grow exponentially! But over the weekend I welcomed the truly fall weather with my family. I broke in my new oxblood penny loafers (or rather, the broke me in..ouch!) and painted my nails the most gorgeous navy purple. Enjoyed with sips of coffee and family talk, we taste tested brilliant cupcake flavors, made kabobs for dinner, and enjoyed the crisp fall air. Needless to say, I've already embraced the wonderful things fall has to offer!

What did you do this weekend? Meet up with friends? Put on flannel sheets?

Fall Television

How I Met Your Mother

Aside from apple picking, fresh caramels, roasted pumpkin seeds, cool evening breezes, and chai tea, what are you most looking forward to this Fall? I'm getting pretty excited for the Primetime line up this fall. Generally, I'm not a TV fiend. I'll watch episodes here and there, but story lines look to be interesting this season. Here are some shows I love, and some about which I'm intensely curious.

I'd love to hear your recommendations for good Fall shows. I'm looking forward to weekends of recorded shows and wool socks. What are your faves?

The Office
Bomb Girls

{Fall Threads}...Concert Connoisseur

One of my favorite past times in the Twin Cities is going to different concerts. There's a plethora of fantastic venues, with a never ending supply of groovy artists. Remember when I went to Ben Folds and the Minnesota Orchestra? Or when I saw Werther? And just last weekend I saw Jeremy Messersmith for an intimate bonfire concert. I love getting dressed up for fancy concerts, operas, and the like. This fall, incorporate some of hottest trends, like peplum, sequins, burgundy, and moto-black for the hottest performances.

{Splurge or Save}...Berry Striped

One of my favorite items in my closet is the button down blouse. A tried and true staple for me, it instantly adds a sense of polish, and yet still cool. I find it to be one of the most versatile articles of clothing. Since I'm such a fan of color and pattern, this blouse grabbed my attention immediately! You could wear it with anything. Bonus: it has navy, the it color for fall.  Old Navy also has a great shirt that's similar. I think I like it more with the relaxed rolled sleeves and double pockets.

P.S. Old Navy has a current promotion! Get 20% off through the 16th using the code ONBIG20.

{Weekend Update}...Homegrown Talent

My hometown is Eau Claire, WI and we are now known for the indie band Bon Iver. I like to mention I went to the same high school as Justin Vernon. Yeah, that's how I impress... But have you heard of Jeremy Messersmith? He is a Minneapolis, MN native and is fantastic. His Midwestern tour starts today, so on Saturday he came to the U of M campus for a pre-tour concert. It was an intimate outdoor concert. With the crisp evening breeze and his adorable bow tie, sweater, guitar combination, Fall seems to have officially begun.

How was your weekend? Is it fall yet? Was this past week the first week of school for you? Or were you simply busy?

{Fall Threads}...Geek Chic

So I'm back at school and already busy with my studies! I work on the computer almost all day and I usually wear contacts. However, my eyes get super tired from the screens, so by five o' clock I'm usually in my glasses! When I study in the library (coffee by side, of course) I need to be comfortable. But hey, I still need to look good! You never know who you'll see. So I stick with some classics. Boyfriend jeans, a cardi and keds. And your school supplies? It better be rockin', cause otherwise, what's this all been for?

{Fall Threads}...Dinner Partay

Nothing says welcome fall and friends like a fabulously fun dinner party. I'm imagining a roasted chicken or pumpkin soup with asparagus mixed in with some sweet potato and eggplant. Yum! We just had a huge family dinner the other night! It doesn't have to be anything super fancy, but it's a blast having a feast when the weather cools down!
Use a fairly neutral dining set so that your food can really pop. White dishes and dark silverware make a bold statement on the table without taking the spotlight away from the beautiful colors in your food. A fun way to incorporate hues in dish ware is the serving vessel. Imagine some butternut squash and asparagus in that turquoise serving dish! Love!

Of course you want look great, but you also want to look comfortable. Make your guests feel at ease with the modern kaftan...a simple shift dress and flats. You'll be looking the part in a versatile outfit.

Don't forget the music! You'll want it just in case conversation drags...OR you feel like dancing!

P.S...How cool is this carbonator? No need to buy tonic water, make your own as needed!

Tweed Off

L'Wren Scott

A beloved fall trend...the grandpa look. Cozy, nubby knits; elbow patches and slouchy pockets; flannel and tweed. Thankfully, with the emphasis on American Sportswear and The Iron Lady, the grandpa look just went from dowdy to dapper in tweed.

Tweed makes me think of studies with leather chairs, cigars, red lipstick, coffee, literature, and phonographs. All things timelessly sophisticated. We are seeing a beautiful fall trend evoking cultivated, confident, comfortable lifestyles all unified. Fabulous! What does tweed make you think of?

{Splurge or Save}...Close to My Heart

J.Crew started the heart trend a few seasons ago, and it still hasn't faded for a fall/winter favorite. And thank goodness! Preppy, whimsical, quirky, all good things for a go-to sweater.

So, you can splurge on this J.Crew Heart Sweater....Or save on this sweater (it comes in different colors, too!) from Old Navy. Either way, show your love!

{Fall Threads}...Crisp Picnic

The past few days have been a little blustery, with cool mornings and brisk nights! But wait, it's still summer! There are still weeks of iced tea sipping, outside barbecues, and picnicking! So to start off our Fall Threads column, we've got a picnic packed for you! The perfect way to transition from leisurely summer days, to crisp fall afternoons!

Having a picnic has always been special for me. I live in a city that is filled with fantastic parks and luscious greens, but still quite urban. Packing a lunch with freshly picked fruit, iced tea, hummus & pita chips is delightful, because spreading out a colorful blanket and nibbling with your friends in the breezy sunshine is happiness. My friends and I love going to the park on nights there is live music to enjoy a great local band, snacks and laughs.

This weekend, grab some buddies and have a picnic to inaugurate the cool breezes and begin bidding farewell to hazy lazy days.

Fall Face-off: Knits vs Wovens

It should come as no surprise that fall fashion is being talked of. The trends are hitting stores, summer sales abound, and if you're like me, you're starting to get that itch.

The itch of fall clothing! It's my favorite time of year for my wardrobe, since I live in the Midwest. Although, with the neons, it's going to difficult to say goodbye to summer. But there might be another itch with fall fashion...

When shopping, just keep in mind some basics. Some people often complain that their sweaters are scratchy, or their blouses don't have any give, their khakis aren't flexible enough, their cute tee shrinks.

In terms of flexibility, feel, and fit, here's what you should know:

Knits are any fabrics that are made by knitting loose loops together, creating rows. Think of a scarf. But it doesn't just have to be a chunky sweater. Most basic tees, camisoles, tanks, pajamas, etc. are knits. They will have give and stretch, allowing you to move freely, with a wide range of motion and position.

When looking at what material your clothing is, knits will generally be cotton, rayon, nylon, spandex, and jersey. Be careful, if an article of clothing is one hundred percent rayon, it will likely shrink. Also, if a sweater has acrylic, it will pill like crazy. Same goes for wool (will pill less, and will actually look alright), and angora.

Woven fabrics have little give or stretch and are created on a loom. They have a liner, under/over crossing of threads. Items such as jeans, blouses, and some dresses are usually woven.

Fabrics that are woven are denim (but spandex is now usually incorporated for some stretch), chiffon, silk, satin, and twill.
