Vintage Vogue

How rad are these Vogue covers from the 1950s? I'm always so fascinated by archived magazine covers. Just think how influential, imaginative, contemporary, and possibly controversial these covers were when published. Today we post half naked, and sometimes nude, women and men on magazines. Dressed androgynously, rail thin, sporting new hair styles, avant-garde make up, or minimalist styles, these covers dictate a culture's look. Although they don't feature the headline news of the day, fashion magazines offer us such a cool perspective of the time. It captures how people lived, because you live in clothes. I love the monochromatic purple, as well as the black and white. How dramatic! And isn't it interesting how often cars are featured?

The Bachelorette - Emily

I finally caved and tuned in for The Bachelorette last night. Declared as America's Newest Sweetheart, Emily attracted a wide following of love-sick fans last season after winning Brad's affection. Now, after her second chance at love lost, she returns as the Bachelorette. 25 men flocked to her hometown in effort of stealing her heart.

The season premiere is always the best; the most fascinating range to people are featured. From wunderkind CEOs to mushroom farmers to single dads, these men represent a sweet (and also bizarre) section of the male population. A quick piece of advice: men, do not dress up as a decrepit, old woman when you first meet a lovely lady. As proven last night, you will not make a good first impression. You will not receive a rose.

While Emily went for it, I was turned off by Kalon's grand helicopter entrance. Not only did he make enemies with every other dude in the place (not a good idea), he immediately was portrayed as a show off. So there you have it - I don't like Kalon. I do, however, find some of the guys (i.e. Charlie, Arie) relatively sweet and normal.

From the teaser previews, this season looks to be another excitingly dramatic love story for Emily. Will you be watching along as Emily and her daughter Ricki search for a husband and father figure? Who do you think will win? Who should be voted off right now?

Friday the 13th

Perhaps the best horror movie ever made, I think I'll be enjoying a little Psycho this Friday the 13th. Have a great (and scary) Friday, everyone!

p.s. Have you seen this great re-creation of the iconic photo?

{Girl Crush}... Emma Watson

One my ultimate girl crushes is Emma Watson. I grew up with her! She's only a few years older than me, and when I was younger, Hermione was the fictional embodiment of me... Now that I'm older, I admire Emma Watson for who she is.

Imagine spending half your life recognized as someone else. I'm an identical twin, and I know the difficulty of defining yourself as just you. That's just at school. The entire world knew Emma as Hermione. Remember how much flack she got when she cut her hair? That must have been the most liberating feeling. She could be herself; not Hermione. But the world criticized her for her bravery. It didn't "look like her." Actually, it didn't look like Hermione. That was the point. She looks gorgeous! She inspired me to cut my hair and be different from my sister, Abby. I applaud her amazing ability to transition from a beloved character to sophisticate, real young lady. We need more Emmas is the world, sending the message to girls to be themselves. Not what popular culture wants them to be, or thinks they are.

I don't think there's a single person who doesn't like Emma Watson. How could you not?!? She is effortlessly beautiful, poised and talented. Not only is she a great actress (proving herself in "Wall Flower" and "My Week with Marilyn,") she's also intelligent, artistic & environmentally aware. Always the epitome of class, Emma is the ideal role model for my demographic. Hey girls, start channeling Emma! This quote from her is so refreshing...
“I find the whole concept of being ‘sexy’ embarrassing and confusing. If I do an interview with photographs people desperately want to change me - dye my hair blonder, pluck my eyebrows, give me a fringe. Then there’s the choice of clothes. I know everyone wants a picture of me in a mini-skirt. But that’s not me. I feel uncomfortable. I’d never go out in a mini-skirt. It’s nothing to do with protecting the Hermione image. I wouldn’t do that. Personally, I don’t actually think it’s even that sexy. What’s sexy about saying, ‘I’m here with my boobs out and a short skirt, have a look at everything I’ve got?’ My idea of sexy is that less is more. The less you reveal the more people can wonder.”

Do you have a girl crush? Who do you admire? What makes them so interesting and unique? Do you feel like you can identify with them?

Spotlight: Classic Kitsch

I hope you've noticed my ultra-rad new header for the blog! It is compliments of my crazy talented twin sister, Abby. She has her own blog, Classic Kitsch, a blog about fashion, food, design and the occasional random musings.

Abby was brilliant & crafted two possible headers based on my favorite clothes, accessories, makeup and fragrances. Totally sweet.

Which one do you like?

Abby is one of the most creative individuals I know, thus it makes complete sense that she is an aspiring interior decorator & art historian. (Talk about ambitious & well rounded!) She is the best sister & roommate a girl like me could ask for. If I like her, you'll definitely like her! Follow her on The Blog, Twitter, Pinterest & Facebook.

Au Revoir, Ashton!

Via
Post break up from Ashton Kutcher, Demi is looking fabulous in a recent photo shoot. What do you think of her outfit? Yay or nay? I think the silhouette is flattering on her. The only thing I'm somewhat unsure of is the fringe trim. Yet in some ways, it completes the look. She looks sleek, sophisticated & glamourous. She has kept her twitter name as Mrs.Kutcher & has is now the model and face of Ann Taylor.

I must admit, Demi Moore ages gracefully. It's as if she ages backwards!

{Weekend Update}...Grandma's House

No matter how old I get, I love nothing more than going to my Grandma Esther's house. She lives about an hour and a half from where I grew up. I always longed for her to move right next door; still do! But I wonder if some of the magic would be gone. I highly doubt it, but there is something so extremely special about getting out of the car, stretching your legs & then running up the steps to burst in and say, "We're here!"
My Grandma is almost 97. She is the most intelligent, kind, wise person I know. She'll tell you all the facts about Jimmy Carter, can recite the list of presidents chronologically & still will tell you who's dating who in Hollywood! Her passion for life can not be beat! Almost every inch in her kitchen is decorated with strawberries or cardinals & smells of coffee and cinnamon rolls. Her house is old, cozy & sits upon a gorgeous chunk of property right in town, with tress everywhere. (Something I miss in the city!)
Needless to say, Grandma Esther is one pretty rad lady! I'm going over with Abby & mom today to visit. I can't wait to tell her all about the past few months. It's been ages!

What do you love most about visiting your grandparents or other family members? Do they have a special love (like strawberries) that makes them them?

{Girl Crush}... Rachel Bilson

Hart of Dixie, Hairdos & Holidays
Photo by Scott Alan Humbert (here)
Rachel Bilson. My style icon, favorite actress & "girl crush." Possibly one of the best dressed stars for young women, always looking effortlessly classy, she's simply stunning. (It helps that my guilty pleasure show is The O.C.) She is the face & one of the designers for Shoemint, which launches in 2012. I can barely contain my excitement. You often see her in killer shoes and bags. A fan of Phillip Lim, Chanel & Rag and Bone.
Bilson is petite like me. She's about 5'2" so it's refreshing to see how she dresses. So often I feel bombarded by the Victoria's Secret Angels who stand heads above me, the average girl. Not only does she have impeccable taste, she has class. Rachel is notorious for her steadfast decision to not do nudity, living by the idea that not everyone has to see all of her. Now that's what I call impressive. All in all, she's a fantastic actress & fashion guru. Why wouldn't you want to emulate her?
